Lunch in the Dark is organized by Dialogue in the Dark Singapore, an organization that raises awareness towards visual impairment through a lunch/ dining experience.
The concept is simple : eat in TOTAL darkness.
If we often hear humans are first a visual animal, then you understand why the experience can be so unsettling at first. After being guided to your table in total darkness by a visually impaired guide (who, unlike us, has no issue finding her way around!)., we were invited to sit down at our table.
When was the last time you encountered total obscurity ? One where you cannot see your fingers although you know they are probably less that 5cm from your eyes? This is the setting where you are being served a simple 3 course meal and drink. While there is nothing too weird in the food served, still, the idea of not being able to see your food nor control anything was uncomfortable at first. After a while, it was fun to see the other senses take over, and pay attention to food, taste a sound in a very different way.
This program encourages interaction and communication among the participants as well as helps raise awareness on the challenges of visual impairment. All waiters and chefs (except few organizers) are blind.
